Day 22 Pueblo, CO to Lamar, CO 121 miles and 1200 feet of climbing

I know I'm starting to sound repetitive, but it was indeed another glorious day for cycling here in the front range of the Rocky Mountains. Mild temperatures and favorable winds made all 121 miles of today's ride very enjoyable. I averaged 19.1 MPH according to my cyclometer.

All-day we passed farms, fields planted with various crops, horses, and cattle grazing in the sunshine. For most of the day, the sky looked like this.
I arrived in Lamar, CO at around 2:30 PM and went to a very popular restaurant here called McDonald's, to enjoy some lunch. Then it was over to the hotel to check-in, retrieve my luggage, and enjoy a nice warm shower.  Dinner tonight was at a local restaurant right across the street.

Two of our riders departed on the rest day yesterday, Ken from Jacksonville FL. and Lueque from San Jose. Both riders had only signed up for the previous portions of our ride. Both were terrific riding mates, and both received a warm send-off at Friday night's dinner before our rest day yesterday. It is hard to believe that one month from today will be our final day of riding on this Cross Country Challenge. I have no doubt that the remaining days will fly by just as the miles did today. That is a bittersweet thought.

Tomorrow we ride into the great state of Kansas.

  1. I played golf today with two of my cool brother in laws and nephew. It was hot. On the 9th hole I joked to my golf mates that,” We were only playing 9 holes today, right”? Of course we were playing 18. At the turn , I hung out in the air conditioned clubhouse as long as I could. When it hit a 95 degrees around the 12th hole, I really wasn’t sure if I could finish 6 more holes. Then I remembered that DD was riding 121 miles today, likely in hot weather. I quickly bucked up and decided not only to finish 18 holes but to enjoy it. Which I did. Thank you DD.

    1. hahahahaha Yes!!!!! Good job!! That's the spirit lad! Actually since you mentioned the heat, it is starting to warm up here in.....Kansas....that's where we are now as of today. So I'll be fighting the heat from now on as well. Thus far we have been lucky in that regard. I wish we could start this thing at 5:30 am to get a jump on it but they won't go for it. We typically leave to start each days ride at 7:00. 90 min of cooooool riding time in the morning wasted. But I'm not complaining.

What's the joke: Golf? I shoot in the 80s.....yup if it's any hotter I just don't go out.

  2. Go Dave go. Great to read your blog. Good to see you enjoying your ride. Great accomplishments. I am continuing my ride. Today marked 1900 miles. I entered Colorado from Wyoming. My wife, Kathy, has flown in to meet me today. 4 dayscoff then back on the road. When you get to the east coast look me up, come meet me and we can complete my ride to Maine together.
Truthfully supported or unsupported your ability to ride cross country is remarkable. Us old guys need to stick together. Enjoy your ride, take the time to enjoy yourself and keep the rubber side down!
