Day 36 Champaign, IL to Crawfordsville, IN 83 miles and 1,770 feet of climb
We left our hotel in Champaign at 7:00 a.m., and for the first time in weeks, the heat and humidity had let up a bit. It was cool, calm and virtually traffic-free as we rode through the streets of town this Sunday morning on our way to Crawfordsville, Indiana. Soon we were back out on country roads with fields of corn and soybeans on either side of us. We passed through towns with multiple churches and deserted main streets. One village had a VFW hall with a World War II fighter plane parked on the front lawn. It seemed like I rode by a Dollar General Store every 15 miles. I arrived at our hotel a bit early, and I had a pleasant conversation with an older Amish couple at the McDonald's next door. They were very interested in our bike trip and where we were headed as well as my age. I told them I was 42. There were quite a few Amish families at McDonald's this afternoon, having lunch after church.
Tomorrow we are off to Indianapolis, IN.
